About Us

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide opportunities for people with varying ability levels and to challenge them physically and emotionally by setting goals to improve quality of life through equine therapy.

“ATRC to me is not just a place; it’s the horses, volunteers, and staff. It is a place where anything is possible.”

— Steve, Volunteer

Our Story

The American Therapeutic Riding Center (ATRC) was founded by Kenneth and Vicki Burkett in 2007 with a vision: to transform lives through the unique connection between people and horses.

Equine Assisted Services utilizes the power of the horse, their movements, sensitivity, and gentle nature to help individuals build strength, confidence, and independence. We continue to help participants set and reach goals to improve overall quality of life.

What began in a repurposed barn—once part of an Arabian horse farm—has become a place where individuals of all ages discover personal growth through equine-assisted activities. Officially opening its doors in 2008, ATRC is a nonprofit organization and a PATH Center Member (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) that serves Northeast Oklahoma.

Now at close to 18 years of service, we’ve expanded to serve over 80-85 weekly participants with 35 volunteers who contribute over 2,500+ volunteer hours yearly. The ATRC mission is also supported by 3 staff members and a large, dedicated community network and sponsors. This effort has allowed us to serve our participants with equine-assisted opportunities that strengthen their bodies, build emotional resilience, and enrich their lives.

ATRC is committed to deepening our impact in the community through our programs and we are so grateful for the continuous support that furthers our vision and mission.
